    try it without the vortex and see what happens...........I have no vortex in my 22.5 and can reach temps over 350 no problem with a HM.

    if it worked when you move the signal wire, you have a break somewhere in that wire or a bad solder joint there.

    Brian, which maverick probe required was it that if pushed all the way in would not work, you had to back it out abit? Maybe thats his problem??

    If you can open the jack on the themocouple, check the wires for shorts and retighten the screw terminals.

    I never go by temp alone, it's done when you can stick a bbq fork or something similar in and when you pull it out there is no resistance or meat holding the fork. like a hot knife into and out of butter.
