    It is done

Waited almost to the last day before a price increase but I went for it and ordered the Summit Kamado this evening. Ordered from Amazon since Weber, yet again, did not have it in stock and I'm sure they won't have any more until after the price increase Friday. At least Amazon offered free...

Thanks for the vote of confidence in the WSK, RLittle. This forum's been a big help.

E6 food to coal distance and elevated food grate thoughts

I know this thread is on its last thread but here's a potentially cheap way to raise the food grate higher above the coals or to add cook space. This is Baby Back Maniac's video showing an outrageous 8 pork butts at once on the WSK. The Rutland fire bricks add 4.5 inches of height. That's a...

Keeping the E6 lower bowl clean

Nice to hear that none of you have had much of a problem with this. That's one more thing to cross off the list. Thanks to all.

Keeping the E6 lower bowl clean

I've used briqs exclusively on the PBC. Just limited experience with lump on other cookers. Sounds like lump is the way to go on the WSK. I've gotten used to scraping the ash pan of the PBC before each use so scraping the WSK every now and then shouldn't be a big deal. I've got a scraper almost...

P shaped vents fully close or not

Stevie, I can't be of any help but I assembled a Kettle for my son-in-law yesterday and noticed the same gap on his. I'll sit back with you and wait for some Kettle expert wisdom. Edit: I noticed that I can push a blade down lightly from the inside and move it to a 100% closed position but it...

Keeping the E6 lower bowl clean

When I asked about cooking chicken over the coals in another thread Darryl-swazies warned about grease dripping into the ashes and clumping making a mess down low where the intake vents and ash cleaning blades are located. I responded to Darryl saying I've got that issue in my Pit Barrel using...

Well that would buy me a couple of briskets or some JD wouldn't it?

E6 food to coal distance and elevated food grate thoughts

Harry Soo swears by it apparently for the same reasons you mention. At twice the price I'm sure it's worth it but that's a wait and see thing for me after spending a few bucks on the cooker. Well, times a wastin' and the price is going up in 8 days. Anyone heard yet what the price increase will be?

E6 food to coal distance and elevated food grate thoughts

Believe it or not I've never cooked chicken indirect, always over the coals but always about 14-16" above them. I've tasted indirect chicken and to me it lacked a smokiness that I'm told is from the fat burning on the coals and creating a smoke that some like me find flavorful. Many here in the...

E6 food to coal distance and elevated food grate thoughts

That's beyond my knowledge of the WSK. Don't own one yet. Looking at photos online I'd say that there's no difference in the dimensions of the bowl with or without an igniter. Looks like lowering the charcoal grate would interfere with the blades of the ash cleanout system.

Much appreciate your confidence, Brett. Thanks. After going through your pics there's no way I'd bet against you!

Called the Ceramic Grill Store. They said their Expander for the Kamado Joe Big Joe fits the WSK and raises the cooking grate 5 inches without crowding the lid. The cooking grate would actually rise 4 inches into the lid because the WSK's lip on which it would rest seems to be about one inch...

E6 food to coal distance and elevated food grate thoughts

Thanks, Darryl. I don't need more space to cook more food. I'm trying to find out how far above the coals I can go so that I can cook (spatchcocked chicken for example) in a way that resembles cooking in a pit directly over the coals but high enough to avoid flareups so that I don't have to...

E6 food to coal distance and elevated food grate thoughts

By the way, nice place this tvwbb. I think these are my first posts. I've been lurking for years. Should the WSK have its own category instead of sharing with the Kettles? Not that I'm ashamed to be associated. :)

E6 food to coal distance and elevated food grate thoughts

I took a look at the Ceramic Grill Store's BGE XL adjustable rig. It's 6 inches tall so its highest point would be 16 inches above the coal grate. That's good but since Weber's expansion rack is 5.1 inches tall I'm concerned that the XL rig may be too tall. Like you said, Dan, I should call them...

Nope, you're right on target. Exactly what I'd like to hear. I see you basically said that in an earlier post but I was too thick to get it until now. I hear Weber's prices are going up soon so I'd better make my move soon. Thanks, Brett.

E6 food to coal distance and elevated food grate thoughts

As I asked in the original post, I want to cook as high above the exposed coals as possible. This is not about cooking more but about having the cooking grate higher above exposed coals--no diffuser. The Weber expander rack is high enough but there's not much real estate. For example, I'd like...

E6 food to coal distance and elevated food grate thoughts

Can anyone comment on this hypothetical? Putting the Weber expander rack (elevates 5.5 inches) on the top grate; place a 22 inch grate on top of the Weber expander rack and maybe even wire it to the rack; place chicken parts, mostly thighs on the 22 inch grate... Do you think this is doable...
