Yes, just finished using u-bolts as handles and attaching them to the cross-crossed grills...have the smoker fired up as I send this. Seasoning it with a first burn and then away we go!

Any preference as to this mod...use second charcoal grate criss-crossed over the first, or the expanded (?) steel grating over the grill?

Well, unboxed my new 18.5” last night. Found 14 fiber washers and 5 steel washers...thanks to Chris’s video post I found out what goes where since the instructions don’t show that.
Looks like steel washers go on the inside in the bottom section and fiber washers go on the outside in the middle...
So after reading about how the dome thermometer leaves to be desired, I’m wondering about options.

* sand
* dry pan covered with foil
* clay/ceramic dish
* water
