Agreed. I will probably just use them on hotter cooks. I don't see me buying any more.

Brand New Damper Design - "The Micro Damper"

I actually picked up some Weber starter cubes because I'd been told that the cotton ball method, which I've used since I got the Akorn over 3 years ago, may be lighting too much charcoal. I used half a starter cube and I feel like it lit more charcoal than a single cotton ball w/ isopropyl ever...

Brand New Damper Design - "The Micro Damper"

Did my first cook with the microdamper on the Akorn today. I had the startup fan max at 100% and fan max 60%. Damper fully open at 100%. I didn't really like how much overshoot I got on startup, but it came down and settled out. After I put them on, I changed the fan to on above 25% and...

    INTRODUCING: the "Roto Damper"

I haven't tried it over 350. for a 250 setpoint it overshot and snuffed, but that was before i lowered the startup max. the next time, i had a setpoint of 350 and a startup max of 50%. it overshot, came back down, overshot again (even higher on the second peak), then i lowered the fan max...

    INTRODUCING: the "Roto Damper"

last night i had the setpoint at 350 and startup max at 50%. had the top vent just a hair past the dimples during startup. i didn't save the graph, but i think it was about 8-10 minutes. chicken thighs didn't care. they were just as good as usual.

    INTRODUCING: the "Roto Damper"

maybe 5 minutes. not much longer than it takes to stick my diffuser in, put the cooking grate in, and clip my thermocouple to the grate. yeah, exactly. seems to me it's because of the blower blowing so hard. no way I can get away with 100% startup max. not even 50% startup max. the high...

    INTRODUCING: the "Roto Damper"

Cotton ball with alcohol. Same as I've always used. It doesn't light too big of a fire without the fan. I've started dozens of cooks with the cotton balls both with manual vent adjustment and with the Auber and never had a problem. I really think the easiest thing to do will be to bring it up...

    INTRODUCING: the "Roto Damper"

Yes, startup max at 100% (as was recommended) is way too high. I dropped it to 50% and it was better, but still too much. I will lower it some more.

    INTRODUCING: the "Roto Damper"

I used the settings you recommended. The grill is sealed tight enough that if I leave the servo closed, it snuffs out the fire. During startup with the fan running, I had the top vent opened just past the dimple. Once it went to damper control, I opened it up some more. I've tried plenty of...

PID settings for Chargriller Akorn with fan only

Oh, I see. I had the fan min mixed up with "on above". Thanks again.

PID settings for Chargriller Akorn with fan only

I finished putting together my RD3 tonight. I got the limits set on the servo. I've got the servo set to be fully open at 33%. I was going to set the min fan at 33% like Ralph suggested. What should I set as a max? Also, when configuring the HM like this, does it just re-scale the fan speed...
