Does running the maverick probes underneath the lid of the wsm create a big gap where air escapes?

Ok, I've done 3 cooks on the 22 WSM. Nothing in the pan, just foiled. What I've noticed is that after 3 hours at 225F, temps steadily climb to 250 to 260 after that. I'm assuming it's because that their is no heat sink in the pan. Also, the cold meat has come up to temperature as well. Ok...

A simple mod that Shaun R helped me out with. I started off with a black ash catcher. Just scraped off the paint with Jasco paint remover. Now I have the classic aluminum look. No idea why Weber started painting them black anyway.

Is it better to stain wooden handles? I have some wooden handles that still have the Weber logo imprinted on it. Would staining ruin that imprint? Thanks

Anyone bend the small lower vent tabs that is on the inside of the wsm? It seems that even when closed all the way, it is still open just a tad. Perhaps contributing to the reason I'm unable to shut the unit down when closing all the vents. I'd sure like to save any charcoal that I may have left.

I scored this grill off of ebay. I know it was old because of the packaging. Seller said it was purchased in the late 70's. Vents stamped A, 1979! I believe Weber used to assemble the wooden handles then weld it on the lid afterwards. The screws appear to be on the bottom side??

I remember reading that the lid temperature is 20-25 degrees different than the top grate. However I dont recall if the lid temp is 20/25 higher or lower than the top grate. ?
