WSM Mods

I just finished reading the WSM mods section. Are any of these really necessary? Any recommendations? The WSM seems to be an outstanding product right out of the box. Since I like to keep things simple, do any of the long-time WSM users have any pointers?

Thanks much......

mods are not needed. I think it just adds some fun to the hobby. I did add the genie handles to mine. I also just used a foiled clay saucer in the empty foiled water pan. You can take it as far as you want or just leave it stock. Either way you will have a terrific cooker!!

In addition to Corey's post, i have added grommets to pass-thru therm probes, and have wired the charcoal ring to the charcoal grate...makes for easy lfting.

It's all personal taste and opinion...like buying a new car. The aftermarket business is a billion dollar a year business. Are any mods necessary? No, the product will perform quite well out of the gate. Are there any recommendations? Yes, of course. All are intended to make your smoking experience more enjoyable.

Me, I put 4 garage door handles on the body for easy lifting and transport. I also bought another charcoal grate, which fits right inside the charcoal ring. It not only closes off the gaps (which allow full lit charcoal to slip through to the bottom of the base), but it I also can criss-cross the grates, which will hold lump charcoal better.

try out the clay pot mod. once you got the MM down, going waterless is the next step. no filling during your cook, no worry about dumping greasy water, less fuel required...

I bought my WSM used and the access door was pretty war torn. I bought the cajun bandit SS door but that's it. Don't really need any other mods.

I wired the charcoal grate to the ring. Makes reusing charcoal and cleaning up after a cook easy. Costs about $2 if you don't have the wire.

I tried adding casters to the legs and it didn't work. Have to do over. Got the drunken sailor thing going....

Handles are a must, nothing worse then stirring the coals and getting ash over the food. I used the handles from a brinkman smoker I had and bought weber replacement grips so it actual looks factory.

If I could recommend one mod, it would be to add handles to the middle. If you buy standard garage door handles and undo two of the brackets they go on easy. You might have to slightly bend the handles in to make them work. They will then beverticle on there. This is the easiest way to add handles wo any drilling.
I do not think weber puts them on because of liability reasons. It is so nice when you need to get to your charcoal.

I have been thinking about handles for a while. Looking at your post really got me excited because I had an old ECB long ago and kept the handles for some reason.

I looked at them again now and I see a metal band and then wood that forms the handle held together by two small bolts. I assume you used the standard Weber replacement handles (http://store.weber.com/items/?pid=1300)? How close is the fit? i.e. after removing the wood, how much metalworking did you have to do to make the Weber plastic fit with the Brinkmann metal band?

Thx,
Eric
