I've seen several pics of folks using the a WSM charcoal ring in their kettles... typically as a simply way to layout the coal on the edges keeping the center empty, but also filling it and using various holed pizza pans as diffusers for other types of indirect cooking.

I think I read that it's about $30 from Weber. Would I just be better off heading to a metal shop to get some expanded metal to try and form a circle with? What guage would I use?

Yes, I would just get some expanded metal and make your own. I have a different indirect setup I use now and then. Use a charcoal ring, main grate, then a roasting pan setup or a large round pan topped with another cooking grate. It's like a BGE setup.

Either 1/2 or 3/4 inch flat would work. 1/2 inch is much easier to bend.

I just bought a 4 x 4 half sheet for about $16.

I guess you can just cut it with an angle grinder correct?

Do you always weld it, or can you form the circle and just bolt it together?

Chris, you can cut it with a grinder. If you need to bend it into a circle, a propane tank is an ideal size to get it round.
Always keep safety in mond. That stuff is sharp and angle grinders can do some nasty stuff..
Beleive me I know!

Thanks AJ. The propane tank I would have never thought of.

I've had my share of disasters with angle grinders as well. It is an incredible tool of destruction.
