WSM Blankets...

Thanks Russell, but buy the time I order it, get it shipped through Customs I'll be near the cost of the GURU blanket.

I did a little looking into welding blankets to see if I could buy one and have it made into a "guru jacket" like item. I figured Id use my weber cover as a pattern but if you start looking into silicon covered welding blankets, the price of the guru blanket is actually pretty competitive esp after being already modified. dont think Id need one for the majority of summer cooks but MN springs and winter are another story. nice to have something to put the wsm in a position of advantage. Still cheaper that an insulated upright cooker by a mile

I'm thinking the same way Chris. I have to travel an hour each way to get one but with the cooler weather it's gonna happen soon.

Well I bought the BBQ Guru WSM blanket today. It's really well sewn. Slides on real nice, right over my two handles. Just have to decide how I can open it up a bit to accomodate two dome vents. It would also be nice to be able to see the thermometer.

Congratulations on the blanket. They're expensive but put together very well. I use the pit thermometer on my digi. A digital pit thermometer would be nice to go with the blanket.

There's a canvas guy here I have dealt with so maybe we can figure something out. Gary I don't think a little heat loss up top would make much difference, what do you think?

HI Chris, no not yet. I will be smoking this weekend but had not thought about using the blanket yet until the weather turns. I can tell you it makes an excellent rain cover. I will take a couple of pics for you and post them over the weekend. Gary Hodgin posted some earlier.

Thanks for this info. In the last month I did a whole turkey and yesterday did a load of boneless chicken breasts, and both took 2-3x as long as normal here in Denver (around 27* yesterday, and generally breezy/windy). The links posted early in this thread are both broken, and I sketched a wooden box type enclosure. However just decided to see how a welding blanket would work, so Harbor Freight with $7 shipping and 20% coupon and I ordered a 4x6 welding blanket and a mess of 1" metal spring clamps for $36 shipped to my door.

In the past I've used the roll type of alum faced bubble wrap stuff about 1' wide from Lowes which works good but melts if it touches the wsm, and I was afraid of the same with the water heater blanket. Put that stuff around the smoker and temp would go up 15* in a matter of minutes, it really helps to block the wind from the seams and the door of the wsm.

I just used my welding blanket (6x8) for first time over holidays and it worked really well....better than I thought. it was really windy and while I am not sure it did much for keeping the heat in, it did work very well for a wind break. I use a little weber side table with my 18" WSM and folded the blanket in half so it was 3x8. it wrapped around the WSM and side table and covered up to the top of middle section. I was very happy with how this worked for the cost and ease of use compared to building a wood wind block.
YMMV,
Kg
