Has anyone used their wsm as a regular charcoal grill? The reason I ask is because I was looking to get an additional charcoal grill but if I dont have to that would be great. Thanks in advance for your feedback!!

Terry,

All but one of those configurations will not work on a 22.5. The kettle style works but I like to grill standing up. Sure wish Weber would make a charcoal grate that would fit on the water pan flanges of a 22.5.

I have grilled by setting the charcoal grate on the bottom cooking grate or setting the charcoal ring on the bottom cooking grate and the charcoal grate on top of the ring. Just not sure how the nickle plating on the bottom cooking grate will hold up with the higher temps.

Scotty.. like yourself I'd prefer grilling standing up. I have a 18.5 wsm but I bought mine not too long ago so the mods may not apply as well. Does anyone use a 18.5 as a regular grill and can you post pics of your conversions?

Not sure what pics your are looking for. I just use the bottom bowl.

The only mod I did was replace the upper leg bolts on the bottom bowl to longer stainless bolts. This holds a grill grate in place.

I also place the WSM on a deck which is about 2 feet above ground.

No pics, but on the 18.5 the charcoal grate will fit on the lower cook position just fine. I did that recently to do some steaks and it worked quite well. I found it much more comfortable then grilling from the bottom bowl directly.

Tony you are 100% rite, i do the same thing move the charcoal grate up to the water pan tabs works great.

If I remember correctly if you do a search for "grilling on the wsm" and similar wording there are some photos and explanations of how people set this up
