WSM 22 Assembly - Door Gaps

Finally got my WSM 22 delivered yesterday after serveral days worth of delay due to the snow in Oklahoma and Kansas. Downed a cup of coffee and cracked the box open.... Overall the assembly was simple, needing only a flat head screw driver, a 7/16" wrench, and a phillips screw driver for the handles. The only thing that I was less than thrilled with was the door on the side of the cooker. It had big gaps on the top corners. I did some 'adjusting' to minimize the gaps, but I think Weber can definitely improve the fit of the door. I may be looking into options to replace this with something that really fits better.

I have a few racks of spares ready for a cook tomorrow... I'm anxious to break her in...

Hey Andy. Cajun Bandit makes a stainless door that some folks report fits well. If you just give the stock one some love, I think you will be pleasantly surprised. It may take a few cooks to get enough gunk on it and you may have to adjust it some, but it'll come around. When I got my 22, I was determined to get the stainless door, but after a few cooks I found the stock door to be fine. Plus it is easy to drill holes in so you can add bolts to the top of it making it possible to turn upside down and propped open for high heat cooks! Give her a chance.

Let's see if I can post this correctly...Not my idea but it works great.
Door Prop Mod with Pics

The only suggestion I have is be careful not to get the bolts up too high (in the normal position) or when you go to turn it upside down, the bolts could hit the opening. I almost screwed up but got lucky. A little wiggle room won't hurt anything.
 
I have no experience with it and certainly won't bad mouth it, but I've seen posts from people who don't like the Cajun Bandit. Frankly, with a little persistence, you can get a near perfect fit with the stock door -- I think that's Weber's real reason for sticking with it (yeah, I know it's cheaper too). My stock door hardly has any smoke escape now -- I just kept working at it.

Shane, thanks for the direct link and advice. That mod is one of the two I have left to make (the other being the lower section brackets to produce a charcoal grill -- I have no intention of filling my deck with grills and smokers -- to many other toys NEEDED.) (But I do love seeing those pics of people whose need is for more cooking appliances

I like the mod for the HH, I can't see how it would work with new WSM as the opening is arched and not squared off like in the pre 2009.
 
Nice work on showing your WSM whoz boss! Looks like you have that door fitting much better.
