I have a red maple tree whose roots are doing damig to my drivw way and carport slab. I will have to cut down the tree to prevent any further damage. My question is is there a difference in the smoke produced between red maple and the sugar maple and would the red maple make a good smoke wood.

I've not personally used it but it should be okay.

According to the Massachusetts Maple Producers Assoc, Red Maple is the most common and 3rd behind Sugar and Black for syrup due to it's .5 percent lesser sugar content.

I wouldn't hesitate to use it.

Just about all hardwood should be good for smoking. Some are better than others depending on meat and taste preference. Sugar Maple is a recommended wood for "sweet" smoking and I can't believe that a .5 percent sugar content difference would be noticeable.

NEVER use any Evergreen or green Mesquite.
