Wood Handle Question

I recently purchased a 1989 22” Weber kettle that was still in the original box. The box was water damage so I decided to assemble the grill. (It looks great) The wood handles that came with it are untreated wood and not stained. They also appear to be made of soft wood.

Does anyone know if this was standard for grills in the late 80s?

The one I had was stained and the wood could of been teak. That was a black one with daisy wheel lower vents.

Does anyone know what kind of wood Weber uses for the handles.

Mine is also black with daisy wheels. It was originally purchased in Canada from a Canadian retailer. I wonder if that has anything to do with the difference.
