Twisted pair Ethernet has a max range of just about 100 meters of cable, and any joints, jacks, splices, etc. in the middle reduce the range rather significantly. The cable does need to be built to EIA/TIA 568A or 568B specs (you need to use the same spec on both ends.) Per Ethernet design rules, no more than 4 half-repeaters between the 2 furthest separated nodes on your network (I rather doubt this is an issue for anybody here.)
Testing, I've had no issues with wired Ethernet on mine, but never in smoker operation.
