Wind Break Theory

I have been thinking, and was wanting some opinions on this before I go any further. When you cook with the bullet does the wind bring up the temperature by feeding the fire through the bottom dampers or does it drop the temp by way of heat transfer radiation like a radiator. And my modification would just include putting a break around the Charcoal Bowl only and not the entire smoker if my theory is correct. please give me discredits for this I want make sure i'm thinking correctly.

Wind to the vents feeds the fire, but it also cools the cooking chamber at the same time, especially since the wsm isn't insulated. So for that reason, the best wind breaks protect both. Just be sure to leave a bit of a gap at the bottom for draft if the cooker is fully enclosed, like inside a plastic drum with the bottom cut out. Been there, done that.

was thinking of building a mini deck around the charcoal chamber at its height and 1' off each side, made of wood and will probably make the sides out of plywood and the top of 2x4's and have it elevated on 4 paving stones with 4x4's at the centers that'll give at least a 2-3" gap for air.

Nick, you're theory is just what I do. Just a 17 gal metal wash tub that I place my 18.5" WSM in.

In my area cold wind in the middle of winter can affect the cook and the cooker, so I keep it as close to the back-door as possible. :wsm:

Do they make those where my 22 1/2 will fit?

A 17 gal. wash tub! Now I would have never thought of that. Good idea Timothy! You never stop learning different things on this site do you?

MattP, please disregard. The Dickel was starting to take hold when I asked that. As far as Scoop and Feed, no and I don't think I want to know! LOL!

Great idea Tim, but does it work? I don't want to spend $50 for the tub for my 22.5 if it doesn't!
Thanks,
Al

Hillbilly wind break price is free... Scrap piece of plywood, scrap 2x4, old fence latches... Hey, it works for me...

As far as blocking the lower vents from wind? Than the answer is yes.
It also contains any hot embers that might blow out on a wooden deck or in drought conditions.
On non windy days I flip it over and set either the mid-section or the lid on before, during or after the cook.
The reason I bought it was to have something to soak my grates in. Everything else just kinda worked out.
