Wicked Good Lump Charcoal - How much is needed??

I've got a 22.5" WSM and am looking at buying some Wicked Good Weekend Warrior Blend lump charcoal for a cook this weekend. How much does it take for a 4-6 hour cook/smoke of some ribs?? The bags I'm looking at are 22 lbs.

Beau, Welcome the the forum, where all your BBQ questions can be answered. I don't use that brand lump, but I do use lump. How much coal is needed depends on how hot you cook. I don't really worry about it as I fill my coal ring pretty full for any cook. If you do the same you will have left over coal after the cook. I dump my left overs in a small metal trash can and use that coal to start my chimney the next cook. Best if you always have extra coal on hand, then no worries.

Happy smokin'

I haven't used the lump but I used the briquettes yesterday on an 18.5 WSM to cook ribs. I used about 9 lbs. for a 5 hr. cook and was very impressed. The cooker sat at 225' for the whole cook except at the 3 hr. mark and every half an hr. after when I checked the ribs. Even then, the temp. spikes didn't go above 250'. I just cleaned the cooker and had a lot of charcoal in good shape left on the charcoal grate and a cup of ash in the bowl.
It was a mild day so that may account for the great results. I'll definitely be using the Wicked Good Charcoal next weekend.

Depends. What target temp and what cooking method (foil/no foil)?

If you're just starting out with your WSM, I suggest you start with a full ring and then observe how much is left over.

You can always shutdown when done and reuse any left over coal. That's better than trying to add coal to finish.

I use it and you should get at least 2 cooks out of a 22lb bag unless your doing an 18 hour cook. I find it burns a little faster and hotter than the BGE/Primo brand but not as hot as maple lump. I did a 18lb shoulder at around 220-250 for 18 hours and used about 1/2 the bag.

Do you light it all at once or use the Minion method for lump? </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

Andrew, use the minion method for slow and low and long HH cooks. Doesn't matter which coal. For HH short cooks you can just light all the coals at once. The minion method extends the coal burn time and smoths it out especially when cooking in the lower ranges.
