Why are CI grates porcelain coated

I'm looking at CI grate replacements for Genesis grill and I'm wondering why the Weber brand are Porcelain-Enameled coated. I suppose it's so they don't rust or the iron isn't directly exposed to the elements and so reducing rust, but I'm like come on after a season of cooking and cleaning the grates that coating has to be gone. Any thoughts?

Also looking at other brands like Craycort

It's not gone. It actually lasts a very long time. The seasoning does help preserve the enamel but it is a very good process Weber uses

I highly recommend the PCI grates. I had the original CI grates (without porcelain) on my Silver B and I just couldn't keep a good season on it -- it kept burning off. I haven't had any issues with the porcelain on my PCI grates despite several years of use.

I too recommend the PCI grates. The seasoning just won't burn off of them. (I have PCI grates on the genisis I refurbished, & also the Q200 I just picked up off of craigslist)
