Which is more valuable, old SS Performers or the newer ones?

Now I see some of the difference. I'd be happy with either one myself. I have a 22.5 one touch gold but I think I would rather have the platform design as with the performer. The gas assist and coal basket mean nothing to me. I keep a 20# bag in one of those plastic flip top containers that Kingsford makes and use a chimney to light up.

Just a comment on the SS Performer propane tanks. HD wants about $50 for a new comparable tank. I had my original tank recertified at Pacer for about $3 and it's good for about 5 years. The recertifcation and a little white spray paint made it as good as new! I am spoiled with the gas assist.

$3 is a bargain.

I didn't like the price to fill the 5# tanks

Huh? A few weeks back it cost me $3.15 to fill mine at the local lumber yard. Personally, I don't like the smaller 1# tanks as they run out 5 times faster than a 5# tank. Maybe even more so if you refill your own from a 20# cylinder.

To the OP's original question...
I think it boils down to the "supply and demand" law. Some really covet the bright red of the 90's and are willing to pay more than a basic black in the new style. I just sold a mint condition Red SS a few weeks back for $180 and another one today for $100, so not setting the world on fire.
I have both the SS Performer and newer performer and I find myself using each of them for different cooks (have them set up differently)

Yeah. I can't even find a place locally that recertifies the cylinders. I did the opposite -- converted my new-style Perfomer to run on larger cylinders. I can still pull the adaptor hose off and use a disposable bottle.

I've got a new 11-pound tank on my performer. It's the same size as the 5-lb tanks from my old Perfomer, but four inches taller. I don't use the flip out charcoal bin on the new Performer. The cylinder stands on the front right corner of the shelf with room for a Kingsford Kaddy charcoal bin on the shelf behind it.

I refilled my 5-lb cylinders one last time before they expire at the end of the month. I'll use those for camping this summer.

A note about recertification of tanks, look for a propane distributor with at least one huge tank out front. When I say huge, about the size of a railroad tanker car. I'm fortunate that Pacer is about 1 1/2 miles from me. I think they did over 3 million gallons last year.

Its $20 to fill a 20# tank and $10 to fill a 5# tank in my area. The 1# tank will last me more then one season since I only use it to ignite the coals.

I've read through the whole thread and it's been very helpful. There's a burgundy SS Performer for sale for $50 I'm going to take a look at tomorrow, hopefully it'll be coming home with me. The hardest part is going to be getting it home - it's 50 miles from home and I only have a sedan. I'll be bringing along my toolbox to take it apart and fit it in the car.
