which do you perfer and why? The old style performer with the stainless top or the newer style performer.. thanks

the newer style.

the glass reinforced nylon can take plenty of heat without melting.
stains scrub right out with some soap and a dish sponge

I have both. Obviously they cook the same. My stainless is shorter, but I like the looks of the stainless better. So I prefer both. Yep, that's a valid choice too.

Well I prefer to call it by it's name, thermoset.

From the web:
"Thermoset molding is a very specialized form of molding used by industries requiring parts that will hold up in extreme environments. Thermoset molded parts typically withstand massive vibrations, extreme temperatures, and aggressive chemical attack."

I like it better than SS, just don't care for the constant smudge cleaning of SS.
We have white kitchen appliances.

On the other hand, had my CL Performer find been SS, I would have loved it too!

I own a SS performer. I love the thing, I picked it up off of Kijiji about 1 year ago to get into charcoal grilling. The SS top is nice but when I bought it was scratched up a bit and has gotten worse since it has been in my possession. I have seen the new performers with the black plastic instead of the grey and I think they look pretty slick.

However the thing that I think that sets the SS performers from the newer models is having the hook up for the larger propane tank (5.9 litre I believe) instead of the small camping tanks.

I have a 1991 red stainless w/o gas assist. Aside from the color, which is obviously unavailable in the new style, I believe that the new style is more functional than mine. The thermoset work surface is larger, will stand up to high temperature, requires no work to keep shiny and little work to keep clean. You will never, ever need to clear the work surface on the newer model in order to access the storage bin.

I have the newer performer with the thermoset.I like it, it is really not cheap plastic. Just don't let anyone sit on it, I hear that will break it.Check out the June 13th post by Tom Gunner, that is exactly what someone did to his table.

I have them both.

Pros of SS
Doesn't stain, set hot things on it. Looks better, in my opinion, when clean.

Cons:
SS Smudges, lower height, HEAVY, access to storage. Oh, and I have to pay $50 for a cover instead of $25.

Pros of my '10
Much taller, easier on back. Better access to storage bin. Larger work area. MUCH lighter overall, so easier to move around the patio or into the back of a truck.

Cons: Can't set hot stuff on the the thermoplastic, work surface stained blackish around the kettle from ash/coals.

I believe you can get a conversion kit to put on a larger propane tank if you'd like. I don't mind the small ones since I don't have a gasser and I only use it for a couple minutes to light the bottom coals on the chimney, then cut if off.

The '10 slightly edges out the SS for me, however, it's really about what you can find on CL! I paid full price for my '10.
