Where to find full packer brisket in Tidewater, VA area

I've looked. I've called. I've had no luck locating a full brisket around here.

Just trying to find a good butcher - no luck so far.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

TIA

Believe it or not I've done really well in the last few months at Sam's Club. I got to talking with the meat manager there and told him about my competing. He told me to come by on Tuesday mornings (that's when they get their shipments) and he lets me pick through the whole shipment. I've gotten some really nice pieces. Butts too.

A couple of months ago we were out at a restaraunt and one of the servers came over and said that the chef saw my shirt (a BBQ comp shirt) and was wondering if I competed or I just bought the shirt. Long story short, I got to talking with the chef and he wants to hook me up with his butcher.

I did find one butcher that swore he could get what I wanted. I used him 2 or 3 times but he just couldn't seem to figure out what I was after.

Funny how the non-butcher routes are working out the best. I guess it's just a matter of talking to people.

I had the same problem in my area since all the brisket around here gets turned into Montreal smoked meat. Finally went straight to the source and found a local slaughter house with a small retail store. They can get me anything I want with a few days notice and most times they have it when I walk in.

I'm a CostCo member and I've talked with the "butcher" there - they have no control over what meat get's delivered. They have no access to anything but the flats.

I went to two of the local Wal-Marts. One had nothing and the other had a very sorry looking, half-frozen (and half un-frozen

) select grade brisket.

I've seen here (or elsewhere - don't remember) where someone has has success at Kroger - so I'm going to stop in at the only one in the area of which I'm aware. I might get lucky.

Thanks y'all for your time. I'll keep looking in this thread and elsewhere - who knows, I might get lucky.

Talk with the Meat Dept. Manager. I know around here they get a few packer briskets on a certain day (can't remember which one) every week and then they are gone very, very fast. They could literally be there one day and gone the next. (S)He will be able to tell you if they get them and if so, when they come in.

Good luck!
