Where to buy oak wood chunks?

I'm from SC, and have a very hard time finding Oak wood chunks. I have read the wood article on the main page but still have some questions. The only oak I see on amazon is from "cameron's products", and it is a very high price, relative to what I usually pay for hickory, apple, etc. I have also heard rumors that home depot has upped their wood selection in store, but I have not been by to see if my store has done it as well. "Do it best.com" was also mentioned in other threads, but I do not see any Oak listed on their site. I guess my main reason for wanting it is most people seem to say it's the best wood for brisket, so I would like to do my 1st go with brisket on the WSM with oak if possible.

Thanks...

I think i would go with mesquite if you cant find oak cheap.

Funny thing is i pay top dollars for hickory, mesquite and i use oak to heat up my house(fireplace) Sure i use it for smoking to.

Try to call a local furniture/kitchen maker and se if they have some scrap(untreated) oak that they dont have any use for. Bet you could get a big bag for just a few dollars. And if you find a place were you can get scrap peices for almost free,i bet they carry cherry, walnut and other common wood.

Nice find Timothy!

And, from New York no less! For the WIN!

Bryan mesquite is great for brisket.

timothy great link. I can actually get chunks there at about the same price I would pay for specialty wood at my neighborhood bbq supplier and they ship for free.

Thanks for the tips, I'm not seeing anything other than logs on craiglist, no chunks. Technically, I could make them into chunks myself, but I don't have the equipment to do that w/out it taking forever. Are you guys serious about mesquite & brisket? Most people I've heard say not to use mesquite for anything. I tried it on chicken once and it was a bit strong for sure, but haven't tried it on beef.

Totally serious. Chicken is easy to over smoke so I use a mild wood for that. I find oak is very similar in strength to mesquite. Just go with 2-3 chunks if your worried about it being to strong.

Okay, I guess I'll go with mesquite then. The only oak chunks I can find are amazon, $15 for 5 pounds. Seems too expensive to justify. I already have mesquite at home anyways.

thanks for the advice

Call some one who sells oak firewood, ask them to cut you some 2-4 in limbs into 3-4 in lengths.
they can make you a sackful while cutting their firewood. Offer a $20 for a sackful.

I went with mesquite last weekend for my butt and ot tasted great. I'm trying to find alder or apple around my way or even mail order?

Mesquite is quite strong which is why I wouldn't use it for anything except thick pieces like butt, brisket, or roasts. Steaks grilled over mesquite are great!

I've got a connection for Red Oak. $20 for 80lbs of RO is a steal.

Apple you can get at HD or doitbest.com Doitbest ships for free to your local store.
