whats the trick?????

im trying to tighten up my handle on the 18 1/2 wsm door. Its very loose and wobbely. It looks like there is a nut just under the handle with a lock type washer but i cant get anything in there. I tried turning with needle nose but when i turned the nut the handle turned as well. I know some of you guys have taken off the handle and put it on the cajun bandit ss door. So whats the trick???????

I have an old set of super thin ignition wrenches that I used on the nut. Have ya tried to hold the latch with pliers and turn the handle clockwise to tighten?
