What are beef tips?

A butcher shop/sandwich shop near where my son attends collage,SUNY Albany, called the Meat House makes a sandwich with beef tips. It is great. They also sell the tips packaged in different marinades. I have never heard of tips. What cut of meat do they come from. I would like to try to make my own.

I think that refers to the thin end of the tenderloin.

Sometimes. More often it is simply trimmings from the sirloin tip (which is actually part of the round), or trimming from the short loin, other parts of the round, or whatever is on hand of the leaner trimmings that the retailer wants to up-sell.
