Weber Kettle Gas Conversion Kit

I get an Error and no pic of the Aussie grate. Can anyone elaborate on it's description? Does it have burner tubes or a circular burner? Like the Performer, I can see line though the bowl above the sweeps for a burner, just cant see a line through the vents?

All,
It has a "U" shaped burner with a thin interconnect tube going across the top of the “U”. The connecting tube attaches to the inner radius of the "U" and goes through vent slot #3 and then attaches to the control valve and plate which is attached to the front leg. (Slot #3 is the slot to the left of the front leg when looking front on).
The "U" shaped burner tube and interconnect tube rest on the bottom of the kettle. You refit the charcoal grate over the top. You should always use a drip tray when using the gas kit to protect the burner and to eliminate flare-ups. A 9 kg (20lb) LPG cylinder generally lasts about 20 hours depending on gas settings, from memory. For roasting you would normally cook on the high setting for an hour and then turn down to the low setting to finish the cooking.

I now have the manual as a PDF, unfortunately it is a 2.5 meg file. If you want a copy email me direct and I will send it to your email address.

Phil, thanks for the pdf manual. Now I want the kit even more!

Since I am always the one to do the obvious, I called Weber Customer Service hoping that I could get one from them - The YL there told me that they have not made a gas kettle since the '80's and she knew nothing about Australia.

I got this nice red kettle that is just waiting for something new and different!

In the 80's I had one of the Weber gas kettles. It was mounted atop what looked like a shortened version of a lamp post, with the gas control mounted in the post. It used lava rocks like most of the gas grills of that era. Let's just say that the current Weber gas grills are light years ahead in both control and performance. If this Aussie gas kit does not use lava rocks it might be interesting to try out.

I saw a Yellow gas kettle as Bob H. described before on CL a while back, it wasn't posted as a Weber but it did stand out.
Thanks Phil and Rich for sharing the info.
I wonder if the gas burners from a Char-Broil Patio Caddy could be adapted to a Weber? Just a thought?

Brian, Bob
This kit is designed for the Weber kettle and is branded Weber. It isn't a wannabe, and does not use "Lava Rocks".
Unfortunately I have had no luck in posting a photo here. Maybe Rich can wave some magic and extract a picture of it from the PDF file I sent.

Rich, the competition conversion kit that you provided the link to does not produce enough heat and if you look at the number of stockists you will find that hardly anyone sells them anywhere.

For those of you who would like to purchase a Weber gas kit, I spoke to a friend of mine who is the Manager of a Weber Premium Distributor store. He can do a credit card sale and ship them to you if you like.

Please email me on my email address in my profile if you are interested and I will give you his details.

Regards

Phil,
Thanks again for the help. I shot your friend an email and am waiting for a reply. I will keep you posted on my progress and let the board know when i get the kit...

would this mod allow one to go back and forth between charcoal grilling and gas grilling? What I mean is say one weekend I want gas, the next I want charcoal.

The gas conversion kit requires a US regulator assembly to fit your bottles. If you want to have a gas kettle you are defeating the purpose of using charcoal. The flavour from the charcoal is the taste most people want to achieve. If you want the convenience of a gas BBQ buy a purpose built.

You can remove the gas kit It takes about 15 - 20 minutes and then use the charcoal. Many Aussies use their Kettle for roasting only (Indirect Heat 375 - 450) and therfore the kit is useful to them The gas cost is about $0.90 per roast Charcoal about $5.50 and Briquettes about $4.25 therefore the gas kits have a popularity if they only roast.
I do not use one. I prefer charcoal/briquettes in my performer/kettles and use the Q220/Genesis if I want the quick convenience.

I have all three, a Weber kettle, a Weber Gas and a Weber Smoker, no problem at all, I can choose what I want and when.

Ahh... but the real trick is - how often can you find an excuse to use them all at once!

(I am rounding off my collection tomorrow when I get my craigslist find of an excellent-condition Genesis 1000 connected up to an LP tank and running)

If they had this mod available in the US for a reasonable price - like around $40 USD - I'd buy it for my second OTS that only gets used once or twice a year for grilling when I have a larger crowd over... Having a gas kettle might make sense in that case. Plus... Having a gas kettle would make for a good conversation piece among weber enthusiasts.

I have a WSM (first Weber!) then picked up an old 22.5 Master Touch in excellent condition (essentially OTG) and waiting on my GF to order me an EP-320 through her rewards (hey it's free and a gift so I can't rush her ... can I?) so I'm one step away. An anxious step though.

Ryan, all
FYI: i was able to procure one of these in the states.... off of Aussie Ebay actually... made sure the seller could ship to the US beforehand...it works well and the "old" style LP connection does fit in the inner threads of the std 20lb propane tank...
not sure if that helps but that was the only way i could figure out to get in herein the US...
actually had it plumbed onto my performer with an 11 lb tank mounted next to the charcoal holder (20lb tank doesnt fit)....

Rich,
It works well, i havent done any "long" cooks on it yet (mostly brats, chicken, etc) but i plan on try it with maybe some beercan chickens and will let you know.... its convenient too...
