Weber fireplace handles on WSM

Just got a Weber Fireplace for a birthday present. The weber fireplace comes with the below handles.

I am wondering if they are the same as the handles (the metal portion) for the Weber Ranch Kettle? Even if they are not, it looks like they will work to add handles to my WSMs.

I am getting an order together for Weber, so whenever I get around to it I am going to register this so I can order a set of handles for each WSM.

those are made out of bamboo which is rather cool. but weber is very protective of them. so do not mention that they are for something else. not sure how you can get a new set without just lying to them. not a good idea.

So when I told my teacher that the dog ate my homework, that was lying???

I think if you told Weber that your puppy chewed them you'd get a pass on the lying part as long as you pay for them. Saying that your fire pit didn't come with them might get Weber to send you a free pair - I'd have a problem with that.

so what happens if they ask for pics of the chewed up one ? its a problem that weber won't sell stuff but i'm kinda assuming its because they have a limited amount of product.

I just want the metal part to add plastic handles to for the smokers. I would be afraid of using wood on my smokers, as they get pretty dirty.

Check at HD or Lowes for some 1/2 inch x 1/8th inch aluminum flat stock, or 5/8th x 1/8th inch flat aluminum stock. Making them is a snap. Drill a hole in the center of your stock for the handle screw, then measure 2 inches each way from the center, and use a scrap of wood and a "c" clamp to bend the stock 90 degrees. Then measure 2 inches down each bent end, and beand it again, 90 degrees to the outside of the center hole. Use a pair of Klein pliers or such to then cut past the last bend at 1 inch, and use a file to ease the ends for burrs. Drill a 1/4 inch hole in each tab, place against WSM, and drill the WSM using masking tape to prevent chipping. Paint the exposed metal with hh BBq black paint to preven rusting. Use 1/4-20 x 1/2 inch SS bolts, nuts, and lockwashers to secure. Total cost, less than $30.00 including the plastic handles.

I know that there was at one time, a detailed thread with pictures in the wsm mod section describing step by step how to do this. Only minimal skills are necessary.

Yep, I wanted to make it easy-peasy so any backyard joe could do em.

The easiest part of this is you use the handle as a template, and a pretty basic and fool proof way

Looks like I will be making them from flat stock.

Just spoke to Weber, the part comes as a unit, with the wood & frame for $16.40 each. Part number 61486.

Tim,

Thanks for your link. I could get away with alum. on my 18", but I've had 120 lbs in my 22". My BIL has access to a metal shop, I am going to take one of the Weber fireplace handles by there and have some made.
