Hi everyone,

Just a quick note to let you know that amazon.com
has a good deal on the Weber Chimney Starter today: $ 9.99 !!

In the past, I have started my charcoal using the "boy scout" method ( charcoal teepee with firestarter underneath ) , so I will definately order one.

I think the sale is good for today only...Be sure to use the link from the VWB:

I think you can buy charcoal chimneys for that price at Wal-Mart and Lowe's & Home Depot pretty much all the time. They might be $11.99, I can't remember for sure. But, no shipping costs or waiting.

Today I visited my local WalMart (not the one with the grocery stores) and was very disappointed with the BBQ/grilling supplies. Didn't even have any rib racks, fire starters, etc. Not nearly what they inventoried last year.

Hellooooo.....BBQ season started here in Atlanta (not that it really ever ended) a couple of months ago!

Yeah, I had the same luck at my local Wal-Mart. They even stop carrying charcoal during the winter months up here in New England.

I usually have to resort to mail order/online shopping to find a good selection of grilling stuff.

I've owned the rest over the last 14 year and the Weber is better by far. Larger total capacity but will start a small load. Inverted cone shape makes for more reliable starting with newspaper. Wider base is more stable on a fish fryer. Second handle makes for easy and SAFE handling. Plastic handles is not going to go the way of a cheap pulp wood handle. Home Depot stocks the Weber and it is probably cheaper than paying shipping if you don't spend enough to get free shipping.

I love my Weber Chimney Starter. The only trouble is that the burning newspaper leaves quite a bit of black ash, which blows into the neighbour's yard and causes quite a mess. I'm thinking of using some alcohol next time to avoid this problem.

Mr. Squeaky, could you elaborate on the alcohol? What type of alcohol, and how do you use it?

At catering supply places they have chaffing dish heaters that are not Sterno but kind of look like it. There is a screw cap which reveals a wick. They burn much longer than Sterno which is why caters love them and they can be re-used until the fuel runs out. They work great for starting a Chimney, just not as fast as a propane fish fryer.

Hi Kelly,

I've just picked up a bottle of "burning alcohol" at the local supermarket. It's a mixture of methyl alcohol (methanol) and a coloring agent. Looks like pretty powerful stuff. I'll try it out next weekend and let you know how it works.

Cheers,

Mr S.

Sounds great. That's been my only complaint with the chimney, is the ashes -- especially when it's windy around here!
