Use a dry rub the night prior to a smoke?

I am trying my 2nd smoke (1st was chicken thihgs). I am doing some baby backs and was putting my dry rub together and have seen many posts that suggest putting the rub on the night before. Others suggest an hour or two before. I am going with a 3-2-1 method when the smoking starts.

Any comments on when to apply the rub?

Unless you want ham on a stick DO NOT put the rub on the night before JMO. 1-2 hours before is fine per the 3-2-1 method. Bryan

Amplification: Unless you want ham on a stick DO NOT put a rub containing salt on the night before.

Only my finishing rubs contain any amount of salt.
