Upper level on gas grill - what for?

All - what are the upper level grates used for? Are they just to keep food warm, or can they be used for slow cooking (e.g., should I use it to slow smoke / cook a piece of brisket)?

Thanks,

Joss

'Taters are good choice. I use the back grate as well as the basket on my Genesis to direct cook 'taters and squash while cooking something else indirect. Works out really well with the front and back burners on, the middle off, and the basket in the front position. Also use them to keep chicken pieces and brats/sausages warm while cooking more. They're great for toasting buns too.

You could use it to cook a L&S Brisket but you'd still need to be cooking indirect, so the main grill would likely be just as suitable.

Thanks! I was also thinking of using it to position a thermometer. Maybe I can wrap the probe for my Polder in foil and set it there...

I do wings on mine all the time:

I agree with T Waite, I use mine to keep sausages/brats/hot dogs warm after they are done. Also for toasting hamburger and hot dog buns. I keep food warm that is finished cooking.

variety of uses for them but on my Genesis it and the basket disappeared to rust long ago. I refused to by another because Weber makes them out of cheap chrome plated steel and for what they charge I expect more from weber

I removed it or did not install it. It gets in the way and I have plenty of space on the grill.

I reverse seared some ribeyes this weekend and started them on the rack to get them up to temp, which worked quite well while I grilled other stuff.

And that included a grilled cheese sandwich, with a hot dog on the basket, Eric S.-picky kid-style.
