Two after-cook questions

I've had three cooks so far and everything has been great but I have a few questions:

1. After the WSM has cooled down and the cover is placed back on, is it better to leave all dampers closed or open?

2. What do you do with the leftover ash after it cools? I'm usimg K blue charcoal and I heard somewhere that it's not to be put in the compost. So far, I've been gathering it in a bucket where I intend to put it in a plastic bag and put it out with the trash. I'd like to be as green as possble when it comes to disposing the ash so any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Steve

Steve,
As far as vents, I like to leave them open. Not scientifically proven but I think it lets the WSM breathe and let moisture out preventing mold build up.

I dump my cold ash out in a little patch of woods. Prior to that I did bag up ash and set it out for garbage pick-up.

Clark,

Good idea with the vents. I've been leaving them open. I didn't think of mold. Good point.

As far as the ash is concerned, I don't have any woods to use.
