I was at one grocery store today and did not see any product called turbinado sugar. I did find "pure cane sugar" in the granulated form. Is this the same thing?

HI Bruce!

May not be the same stuff. Look for Sugar in the Raw...the most popular name I have seen. Many use this type of sugar because of its higher burn point.

However, I would not worry about sugar burning when smoking. Sugar has a rather high burn point(above 350?) and will not burn if you keep your smoking temps below 275?.

It WILL burn when grilling.

Save the money and buy more meat.

You can test this theory yourself by following the Carson's Rib technique of smoking ribs. Slather on sauce BEFORE and every 1 1/2hrs. after that until finished. NO burning...have done it several times myself using very sweet BBQ sauces.

Bruce, while I have never had a burn with any type sugar, it has been my experience that you get a more earthy flavor with Turbinado Sugar than with regular white, or any type of brown sugar. This is only for rubs. Additionally, it seems to hold the rub on the ribs better.

That's my two cents. Happy Experimenting!
