Trolling for advice...

I'm reaching out to the TVWBB hive mind to see if I can come up with some suggestions on a project I'm thinking of undertaking.

So, I want to build a Korean BBQ table for my lanai. My plan is to embed two Smokey Joes in it for the cooking. This raises a couple of points...

1. Would it be better to build a table from scratch, or mod an existing table? If the latter, what would be a good type of table to use?

2. What are some various ways to mitigate people burning their legs while sitting at the table?

I'd like to just throw it out there and see what kind of ideas come back. This is a pretty sharp group of people who do some pretty creative things.

I guess it would be faster and maby even cheaper to use an old table. And mod it with holes and a second shelf to hold the grills. But it will sure look better if you do it from scratch with the final product in mind. About the heat proplem vs knees is a tricky one. But make some pants to the guesst´s from old welding gloves might be the trick

Never really looked in to the design of these tables...Will look around and se if i can come up with any usefull info.

Yep, that's what I'm talking about.

Interesting idea, and that would be such a fun place to hang out and entertain. If you aren't dead-set on the SJs, Lodge makes a great little hibachi grill that would also fit the bill nicely for this project. Being square, it may be a bit easier to modify an existing table to better fit the hibachi than the SJ. Plus, the hibachi would give you that real asian feel. I'm envisioning a two-tiered sort of table, where the grill surface is above the table top, but the legs are down below, setting on the second tier. That may allow enough space to not have that bottom tier be too hot. I'm tall, so I always imagine things at at least bar-height, and the two tiered approach would be tall enough to give you room to those two layers, but still sit comfortably pulled up to it. If your lower tier was tiled, or just double thick plywood even, the heat would not be enough to get through it on the tops of people's legs.

I don't know if it's practical but what about cutting a sono tube to the right height/underneath the bowl??

They do say it's heat resistant and does come in various diameters

From their pdf:
Heat resistance eliminates form deformation during the pour.

Thanks, everyone, for weighing in. This has definitely provided me with some ideas that should serve as the foundation for a good design.
