I got a hankerin' to try a Tri Tip. I have never seen it around my area. Is it generally hard to come by? Anyone here from the Albany NY region know where to pick it up?

I've not seen them in Albany when I've shopped there - though I've not been to very many stores. Do you have occasion to go into central Mass or Conn ever?

Not really, I'm more of a Vermont person...lol. Love it there, great whitewater......Is there a similar cut that is more readily available?

Not really. Just the ball and the flap, but both come from the same part, the bottom of the sirloin (the three are separated from each other).

I cook in Cohoes from time to time. If I get a booking and can grab you one on the way in I'll let you know. Meanwhile, ask around. Ask, specifically, if tris can be ordered. Many places don't carry them - but don't know that they can (they don't even know what they are).

Bill,
Do you have a Trader Joes or a Wegmans near you?
TJ's carries regularly, and Wegman near me just started to carry but can't seem to keep in stock, thought they will order for you. Some of the other chain groceries near me have also started to stock from time to time.

That's why I asked if he went into Mass or Conn. Those are the closest Trader Joe's. Hadley, Mass and W Hartford, Conn are the two closest.

(Worth the trip, Bill, if none available locally. They have a lot of good stuff.)

Iam with you here in The Detroit area we can normaly get about anything known to man here ! Specialy down in the eastern market area but I haven't been able to find a tri tip yet .
Iam sure if I ask for it special order seeing as how a LOT a the places there butcher there own meat I could get it . But not a chance a just walking in a store here and just picking one up out of the cooler

Guy,

Not sure where your at in MI. But along with Trader Joe's that Kevin mentioned is Costco.

I regularly pick them up there. Some times you have to ask one of the meat guys for them.

Good luck

Tom

Guy,

Make sure they know to get you the roast. Sometime costco cuts them into steaks and puts those in the case. Thats the reason you have to ask one of the meat guys.
