Transporting an 18.5 WSM

Hi all,

I've been asked to smoke a couple of port butts up in NH (I'm in NJ) and will need to transport my WSM. I have an SUV (Ford Escape) and can put the back seats down so I have plenty of room. But I was thinking maybe buying a plastic trash can at the hardware store to put it in. That way I keep everything contained and no soot or dirt gets on the vehicle. Does anyone have any experience with this? Can anyone suggest a better way to transport this in my vehicle to NH and back?

Thanks in advance for any advice you can give!!

Jim, i have used my Expedition to transport the wsm, all i did was lay some cardboard over the carpet and set the wsm on top of the card board, no problems at all, all grates i put in the charcoal bowl.

Jim,I took my WSM on vacation to Maine a couple of years ago. It had a blast!

I built this crate for it to travel in the back of my pick up. I turned the lid upside down insidethe body of the WSM (use a towel to protect the finish). The lower slots,on top in the pic, were used for the grates and some newspaper and wood chunks. It travelled well and was the hit of the big family reunion!

Saran wrap it. They use it to secure pallets all the time. A sharp knife will make short work of unwrapping it. The Saran wrap will also keep your car really clean.

Lawrence, nice idea

When I transport mine(which is reallllllly greasy). I lay down layers of newspaper on the floor mats and separate the sections. Make sure that the greasy sections are facing the paper.

I have a small car you should see my transporting mine lol. I use drop cloths and have it seperated across my front seat, back seat and trunk lol I have to take a picture of it one day.

Thanks for all the responses!

@Noe: Yeah, I would definitely do something like that for a shorter trip. For longer trips I'd want something a bit more secured.

@Phil: Whoa! That's awesome! If I had the tools to do that, I would!

@Lawrence: I have one of those saran wrapper things that you buy at the moving stores. That might be a good way to bind everything up and keep it together.
