Touch up for Red Performer?

I'm new here - new to cooking with charcoal actually (I've had a Genesis gas grill for a few years now). I just bought a new Performer about two weeks ago from Amazon and someone introduced me to this site. Since then, I purchased a SS Performer from CL last week and just found another one that I'm heading out to pickup tomorrow (my wife is starting to get worried).

The new one is red and from my understanding after reading many of the posts here it seems to be somewhat rare. My question is this - from the picture I've seen of it, there is a very small area where it looks like the porcelain has come off (I'll know more tomorrow when I pick it up) - is there any way to patch/paint this? If so, I assume that high heat paint is the way to go, but does anyone have any suggestions for a good brand to go with (or conversely, any to stay away from)?

Any suggestions you can give me would be greatly appreciated...and thanks for all the help I've received so far from just kind of lurking in the background!!

What kind of "Red" is your stainless Performer? Is it "brick red", meaning essentially burgundy? Or what I call "true" red, meaning bright red?

If bright red then you may be able to get away cheaply by using a good quality Caliper paint - they're generally rated at 800 or 900 degrees.

You might be able to find a grill or header paint that has a higher temp rating, but they generally come in a flat finish.

Best (and most expensive and time consuming) option is to use a quality VHT (very high temperature) coating, let it cure, then follow up with a VHT clear, letting it cure as well. Properly done it should last many years.

It's actually the brick red (which I didn't know for certain until this afternoon). I ended up picking it up for $80. There was more rust on it than I originally thought so I figured I'd call Weber and see if it was still under warranty - and since it was a 2004, the kettle and lid were. The bad news is that they are out of the red ones; the good news is that they are sending me a brand new bowl and lid in green (which matches both my Genesis and my new Performer).

Basically, I'm going to have a brand new SS Performer for $80 (everything else on it was in perfect shape, including the igniter and propane tank). Although I would have loved to have it in red, I'm pretty happy right now (they even paid for the shipping).

Now I just have to figure out how to take the old one off and mount the new one (I'm not the handiest person around) and figure out what to do with the old kettle/bowl.

Thanks for your help - I genuinely appreciate it!!!

Gray;

The bowl and most of this grill come apart with a 7/16 inch socket and wrench, it is simple plus you can go to weber.com and download the operators,and assembly manual for free,you got to love Weber.

Thanks!!! I have the parts from Weber but am waiting right now. We are in the process of having a patio put in (with walls being built specifically for my grills). I'm out of town next week but when I get back, the entire thing should be finished and I can start taking it apart (then rebuilding).

I appreciate your help!!!!

What color did you get from weber and how did you go about this to get the warrinty, pictures, etc.

Sorry, I didn't see this until today. They were out of red so they gave me my choice of green, blue or black (I chose green to match my new Performer and my Genesis).

All I did was call their 800 number and explain the situation. They wanted to know the "serial number" and I gave them the two letter code from the vent dial on the lid.

They asked me a couple of questions about where the damage was and what kind of damage and asked me to take some pictures of it. They then sent me an email with a case number so I could simply reply to that email and attach the pictures.

It was all pretty simple. After they received the pictures, they called back and told me they were sending me out all of the new parts (although they didn't send everything the first time - I had to call back to tell them what was missing and they sent it right away, so it was done in two shipments. NOT a complaint, I'm extremely happy that they replaced it, even if it had been in ten shipments).

Hope that helps!!

Gary;
Thanks for the response, after you got the parts how was the install? Webers are not to tuff to work on most things are simple just take a little time.

Unfortunately I can't tell you yet. It's all still sitting in boxes waiting for me!!

The folks that are working on installing my patio haven't been able to finish because of all of the rain the last two weeks. I thought I was going to get home Friday night and be ready to go, but no such luck...at this point, they're hoping to be finished on Saturday (depending upon weather) and I'll start on it next week (I don't really have anywhere else to work on it unless I want to squat in all the mud in the rest of the yard, so I'm content to wait).

I'm hoping you're right - and it doesn't look too difficult, though I'm notoriously bad at these things.
