Touch screen via HDMI?

Getting ready to assemble my first HM and had a question to see if anyone has connected a touch screen to the Rpi via the HDMI connection. If so, Can the touch screen stay connected for viewing and control?

Not that it can't maybe be made to work somehow I'm sure, but HDMI itself doesn't support touchscreens. Also there's no GUI built into the HeaterMeter firmware at all so there's nothing to look at.

For the price you'd be much better suited buying a tablet and duct taping it to the HeaterMeter. :-D

That gives me an idea!! Getting my soon to be old note 2, ditching the LCD, and put all into case. Then I could either use pitdroid or the HM interface, with touch screen. No more button or LCD. But, hey, the HM is good the way it is now

Actually, there are there are a couple of touchscreens made for the RPi that might work. Wouldn't it be possible to just run the HM web interface using one of the web browsers built into the RPi?

Yeah there's no "X windows", which is the Linux gui system, on our firmware. Which is part of the reason why it is like 5MB and not 1GB like the RPi firmware. The 2" touchscreens are way too small for the regular HM web interface, 5" might be ok, and at 7" you're getting pretty expensive, just buy a Nexus 7 and you can use it for more than single purpose.

Ah yes, that's right. I've been doing so many RPi projects lately, I forgot that HM runs off of OpenWRT. Does OpenWRT not support something like KDE or Gnome? In any event, I agree that the best solution is a spare tablet or phone. I just use my smartphone for access using either PitDroid or the HM webpage.

No, OpenWrt is a light system of packages and software used for embedded systems so there's no built in GUI support. I think there might be packages for it for some platforms. I use OpenWrt because it has a decent webui for configuration which is very extensible to include the HeaterMeter stuff. Also, it is only a few megs which is great.

Interesting... wasn't aware there was no GUI built into the HeaterMeter firmware, guess the only option for a touch would be through a Tablet connected wifi then. Also with multi colored duct tape, I could dress it up pretty nice.. lol..
