I have a chimney that I use with briquettes and lump that ignites really easy with paper or some cardboard strips. I have found some lump that is harder to ignite and have seen some people mention using torches to light it. I have done this also and have found a great deal on a torch if people have ever thought of using one.
Lowe's is selling these auto light torches for 50% off right now and I picked up a few. They burn way hotter than a standard propane torch and start lump pretty quick. You can save you some money, get a torch for the house and one for lighting lump charcoal to boot..
Prices vary a bit from state to state but some have been as cheap as $7.61 from my playing.

Mods feel free to delete or move if necessary as I`m not 100% on the rules on link posting to other than Amazon which support the site ( I have that link as my only link to Amazon ) Just found a good deal on a torch that may help start a smoker.
