Too much smoke coming from left side Silver B

Hi, my Genesis Silver B there is too much smoke coming from the left side when grilling. My brother in law and few more that I acquired are doing the same. My has the temp gauge on the right. I believe mine is a 2000 or 2001 model.
My friend has a Genesis Silver B model that has temp gauge in the middle and it seems there is less smoke. I think is 2003 or 2004 model. Is this the design ? is that just how it is ?

The smoke will exit based on 2 major factors. 1. Where is the food placed, 2 how is the wind current

Yah, unless the burners or maybe the flavorizer bars are trashed and burning unevenly, I see no reason other than what larry listed for smoke to exit the grill unevenly. The thermometer should not affect it at all.
