Thread repair tool

I came across this in a FB video. Looks pretty cool. Can repair any size threads on bolts and I guess you could use the inside one for nuts.

Ouch. I was expecting a price around $50.

It looks easy to use, and I suppose if I were working repair gigs it could be a fast way to make up time for damaged threads.

Yes, for that price I will just drill through and re tap.

If I made my living rebuilding engines it would probably be in my tool collection though.

I don't know how well it's going to repair damaged threads. That's going to greatly depend on just how well the cutters engage in the existing threads. I've had good luck with thread chasing files, but those only work on external threads, do depend on a fair amount of room and a deft hand. OTOH, I've repaired damaged axle tube threads with a thread file and still put a couple of hundred thousand miles on the vehicle.

If I have to drill out threads, I'll be sorely tempted to use Helicoils(tm) or Timeserts(tm.) Both of those are probably way overkill for grill rehab. I had a Timesert put in a Yamaha XJ600 motorcycle head for an exhaust stud that snapped off, and I think that it's still running 30 years and 2 owners later.

Obviously overkill for grill work. I read some of the comments on the Amazon link above, and it seems like the value of this tool is the ability to make repairs in a confined space without any access to the end of the piece. You apparently don't have to measure either. Also, buying every standard and every metric tap and every die in every thread pitch (in left and right hand rotation) would be an even pricier proposition, so the set might be a bargain for the right person.
