Think it'd be OK to use Maple Syrup in place of brown sugar for brine?

I think I'm going to smoke a salmon filet tomorrow using Chris's Salmon - Brined Appetizer-Style recipe. The only thing is I don't have any sugar but I do have some Grade B maple syrup. No problem, right? Maybe maple won't go with the other spices.... and I do have to go to the store in the next day or two.
 
turned out good! I didn't have any 'savory', I used celery salt instead. I haven't oversmoked anything for years so I thought I'd try - I threw in a couple handfuls of mesquite chips and then an hour or so later I threw in a couple of apple twigs.... turned out great! We've been enjoying it with cream cheese & triscuit crackers so far
