ThermoWorks RFX with WSK?

Unfortunately, the search term "RFX" is too short for using the search function. Has anyone used a ThermoWorks RFX with a WSK? I know it's SUPPOSED to work through the double walled setup, but I hope someone can confirm. I wouldn't have the gateway far from the grill, so I won't be relying on long range.

Also, I know, WSKs don't need ATCs 😁, but I will never be able to sleep doing overnight cooks otherwise. I also understand that I need to learn how to dial temps in without an ATC. I want the option to be well rested and have a brisket ready for late afternoon without having to wake up at some crazy hour.

Thanks!

Email or chat their support. They are very responsive.

WSK is not the only double walled metal grill or smoker.
Can do! I suppose if I find they were full of it (which based on their reputation is unlikely) I at least have some ammo if I have to go full Karen on them later :p

Also, I have tried to scour the web for results with any double walled smoker with the RFX, but I'm coming up empty. Could be that I'm lacking in google-fu on the topic.

Yes, the forum search function does not index three character words. Here's the search term to use in Google that will get you the results you're looking for:

This one brings up no results:

excuse my ignorance, but why not just go with a Signals and wired probes? signals has been flawless (for me at least) and you won't encounter the connectivity issues of wireless. on a long cook, i plug in my signals to a power source and can watch and monitor the entire cook either when at the house or if i run a quick errand while in mid-session.

I had Signals and added RFX during their Memorial Day sale…
It is so much easier to open up a case and plug the probes in without worrying about tangling or routing of the semi-stiff wires

Another advantage of RFX is that you can sear with the probe in place - constantly flipping for even crust over charcoal (I don’t believe any other wireless probes can go anywhere near the advertised 1000f of Rfx)

RFX has worked in my oven and WSK

I had trouble with the signal through the Memphis double wall 430SS and had to move the bridge from the side shelf to the front shelf - I guess going through another chunk of meat, double walls and down through grating was too much signal loss

There are some niggles that they can address through software and app upgrades, but so far the convenience of the wireless probes is very welcome

thanks for that input.

i bought the wired probe's magnetized storage discs. they've worked well for me so as to avoid tangles and knots.

for my searing, i use my thermapen. i guess i've gotten used to timing my seared steaks so i probe test 2-3 times as i flip and sear.

i can see your use model. makes better sense to me.

how long do the batteries last in the wireless probes? what kind of battery doe they take?

In addition to what R Chin said, I paid $263.30 today before tax and shipping for a two probe kit and a billows fan. I also don't like working with the wires at all when it comes to the probes that go into the meat.

The meat probes have their own holders that I think use AAA batteries and charge the internal batteries of the wireless probes. They claim the probe battery will last 52 hours, but I don't believe that for a second haha. I'll be happy if they last 12.

The sale ended hours after I placed my order. Obsessing over this since last night paid off! I'm sure there will be another sale, but if I waited until now, I would have been so annoyed. Same two probe kit went from 175 to 250 😁

I also checked the website using a different device and on cellular to be sure it's not a cookie or cached data..... it looks like I really did luck out with my timing.

You select temperature resolution to match anticipated cook duration (0.5, 1.0, or 1.5f change before sending update)

If you have bad signal or run out of juice - charging is 80% in only 10min (I think they must use some type of capacitor rather than lithium ion type battery)

If I hadn’t planned ahead and sous vide my tri tips this weekend, I would have definitely used the Rfx over lump in the WSK

I believe even the ThermoWorks wires are only rated to 700f so very easy to damage in case of grease fire

Best use case: Rotisserie =P

Yes! I didn't even consider the rotisserie!

I was looking at the RFX but I read some of the 3-star reviews that complain about the app integration, which would be the main selling point for me...specifically this one.

I have no doubt whatsoever that TW will get there someday soon, but I have other wireless thermos to use in the meantime.

Yes - totally and completely agree on the separate channels mentioned by the review

In Signals, one session has grate and 3 probe temps and all on one graph

With Rfx,you must start a session for gateway (wired ambient probe) AND one session for each wireless probe - then you can only see each individual graph one at a time. TW has stated that this will be addressed and I have no doubt they will, but it is a pain in the #*$”*@# in the meantime.

The probe limit that reviewer is referring to is a 10 probe limit with the consumer license for TW app. If you want 11 rfx probes up to the limit of 72 (I think) then you will need to pay additional for license to their commercial app.

One other purchase consideration is that these are manufactured in China. Who knows what will happen after tariffs kick in and TW sells through this first batch of Rfx…

... and TW sells through this first batch of Rfx…
I wondered about this first batch too, if that's what this is. The RFX is still relatively new and a 30% discount at this early stage makes me wonder if there is a "new and improved", fully integrated product on the way (potentially with a new and not-so-improved price). Maybe they rushed this first batch to market to try to recover some of the R&D cost, or to reserve a spot in the wireless thermo market...heaven knows, competition is brisk in this market and TW took quite a while to jump in. There is still a lot to like about this product, though, and hopefully it will mature to the level of their Signals product soon.

I don’t believe this is a half baked product hardware wise.

They have 4 sensors so that it can display the “lowest” as the true center of your item in case you insert too deep or shallow

The battery (I believe it to be more like a capacitor) is located in the tip - protected from ambient temperatures. The demo even shows the probe being used in a deep fryer

Even if the battery/capacitor suffers from self discharge as NiMH or lithium batteries eventually do - the probes charge to 80% in 10m and 100% in 20m

They may improve the hardware down the line as they receive feedback, but I believe they tested competitors products and took their time to develop the hardware to meet the premium expectations their customers are now used to

When the limitations of the app are addressed, it will be a true, expandable, more convenient version of Signals

Don't get me wrong, I think the probe is one of the better parts of the system and certainly not half-baked. It's the integration with the app that seems rushed to me, but I don't claim to understand the challenges involved. I wish that TW would have made more prominent that the integration was still under development rather than a potential buyer having to drill down in the reviews to find out. I've been waiting for TW's wireless thermo entry like so many others because I hold their products in the highest esteem. I LOVE the Signals (and the Smoke with gateway before it) and I was hoping the RFX would offer similar functionality, but it's not there yet.
