Thermometer Tear Down

I made the recent discovery after a Smoke, that ended thankfully before the rain, that my thermometer busted during the rain while the smoker was still hot(250*) which also killed my Birthday gift Maverick. Weber sent me a free new one since it died pre warranty. But was wondering has anyone actually opened the thermometer to see the guts of em? If so, this engineer would love a simple walk through on how to break one down to see inside, cause right now, the meter on left is broken and the one on right is new one, I wanna see if element was busted from quick cooling or water damaged somehow?
 
I'm sure it's just crimped together so you'd need to cut it apart using something like a dremel with a cut-off wheel.
