Thermometer Location

What are the pros and cons of lid and middle section locations?

Lid: higher than at grate temp

Middle section below grate: must get tip of therm passed the higher heat area and thus it gets in the way when using lower grate

Perhaps once again Chris is right that lid is best.

What length is ideal? 2.5" or 4" ?

Thanks for the feedback guys.

A 6"-stemmed thermometer-- like the Weber 9815 Replacement Thermometer-- passed thru an upper bolt hole does not interfere with the lower grate at all, is not compromised by heat rising around the perimeter of the cooker, and is as close to measuring at the top grate as you can get.

Doug, thanks for the reply-I aggree it should give 'at the grate ' temps. I am glad it does not interfere.

Has the weber replacement thermo performed well for you?

Any need for a Tel-tru etc. other than wanting a larger diameter dial?

As long as it continues to pass a periodic boiling water test, I find the Weber perfectly acceptable for my purpose. As to the dial being smaller than a Tel-Tru or similar, I merely rotate the face so my target cooking temp is at the 12 o'clock position-- that way I can tell even from a distance if it's where it needs to be.
