Hey guys, Do you find the size difference significant over the 22. Surface area wise, I have calculated it to be around 140 sq inches bigger which is about 12x12. Doesn't sound like much, but then I realised it would be the equivalent to putting a 12" skillet on, and then still having my 22" space. So in that regards is sounds like it would be worth it.

Hey Jeff. The size definitely seems worth it if you cook for a lot of people often.

However, I've found that multiple 22" kettles offer a few more perks. (like the ability to have different heat zones or charcoal set ups)

It's hard to cook 6 big steaks on a 22 though

Jeff,
Now that I've had mine a while I can honestly say that I probably don't NEED it but I wouldn't trade it for the world. There are probably very few cooks I do that require the perfect amount of grates space that they fit on my 27 but I couldn't squeeze onto my 22 but still the extra space is always nice and you definitely notice it. It's particularly nice for big stuff like briskets and pork butts and I like that I can lay out baby backs flat without using a rib rack. Also, grilling fajitas is really nice because I don't have to do batches. The other times I really notice the space is when I am either cooking something on a skillet or dutch oven and also trying to cook something else to the side. It's also nice for using cedar planks.

I don't think you are going to be able to justify it from the "thinking" side of your brain for reasons like Troy mentioned but the BBQ lover who spends 5-6 nights a week in front of a grill loves having the extra space when I need it and plans to use the crap out of it over the next 20 years...with that in mind, it's was and still is a no-brainer.

The only thing I would possibly trade mine for at this point is a rancher but I would miss the conveniences the 27 offers (one touch, ash bucket, therm, etc).[/QUOTE]

Thanks everyone, will keep it in mind. I do like like the idea of running two 22's with different temp zone, but wouldn't want to have to fire two up just for the space, especially if one set up served my needs for given cook. Just too many things I "need". And to think I thought it would be less dangerous hanging around here instead of the photography forums. HA
