i wonder if this weber q replacement part would fit.

It should.The stem size is the issue for the most part. Keeping the stem size to under 2" is preferable; the Q one is 1.9", so it should be fine.

The weber Q thermometer won't fit. I have a Q320,I took out the thermometer and tried it on the jumbo joe. The base of the thermometer is too thick to get through the hole.

I like the placement. All you need is a bit of a reference point on this small grill once you get some readings at grate level to compare it to. I usually just stick the old weber therm from a busted gasser through the top vent. Close enough for cooking on small grill. actually, sometime i could care a less and don't even care to use a therm.... many years on JJ or any of my grills not using therm, but instinct.
