Summit S420 cone valve orientation

While cleaning my Summit S420 gas valves because they had become sticky I stupidly didn't pay attention to the orientation of the cone valves when disassembling them. The cones have the holes plus the slot on one side. When placed back in the valve body is the slot on the bottom toward the gas inlet or toward the top? weber cone.jpg

I have learned to always do one at a time. That way, you always have another one to use as a guide in situations like this. I am not sure if that is what you did or not. Otherwise, I am sure someone can help you out.

I'm pretty sure that one you put the stem half back in and the cover on it only goes back together "one way" to have the stem "flat" side facing upwards.

This is the only picture I could find of one I worked on:

Well in the "off" position, the "closed" side should be facing the "inlet" side of the valve housing.

The reason I originally asked the question is because after putting the grill back together it would not light and I thought maybe I had put the valves in incorrectly. But, I did have the cones in with the proper orientation (starting with the opening in the up position) but the side burner valve had gotten opened somehow and that prevented the grill's burners from lighting. Since the side burner control is under the flip open cover I didn't think to check it.

In either orientation there is no opening facing the inlet when in the off position. But if not in the correct position there won't be an opening facing the inlet when turning the dial. But with the grill not lighting I was questioning my logic. :)

I fail to follow this. You can't run the side burner together with the main burners?
