Soup too hot

I make a full pot of soup with one chicken and 5or 6 vegies...I added one whole cascabel pepper. Wife called foul! Too hot! I thought it was pretty good.

Should I just remove the stem and seeds to relieve the heat?

It's the placenta--the ribs that run down the interior walls of a pepper--that contain most of the heat. Because the seeds are attached near the placenta some can pick up some heat but they do not contain heat elements on their own. Removing the placenta (much easier on a fresh pepper) and seeds can decrease heat. For dried peppers it is often easier to get rid of the seeds and use less of the flesh.
