Smoking Wood

I went out today and tried to find some wood. I found hickory and mesquite chunks with no problem. The only other type of wood I could find around here at this time of year was cherry,apple and maple wood chips. If I use them should I soak them first and would they last longer if I put them in a smoking box and place right on top of the coals? Thanks!

No0 need to soak the chips either place in box or use a double thickness of foil and make a bag to put the chips in, bunch a few holes in the bag and place on the charcoal.

Thanks Jim, I just wasn't sure if the smaller size of the chips would necessitate soaking them first so they wouldn't burn as fast.
