smoke wood question-

I have some sort of apple tree in my back yard.
Last summer I cut off a couple branches, maybe 3" or 4" at their widest point.
They have been sitting in my backyard for about a year now.
This may be a stupid question..but...
Can I cut it in chunks and use it in my new WSM?
Or do they need some sort of seasoning or something?

After a year I would think that they should be seasoned enough. Roll the branches over and check for bugs, and that the wood is still sound, not wet or spongy.

NO NO NO NO. Don't use it. It could be toxic. Cut it into chunk size pieces and ship it to PO Box 1987 Station G Ottawa On Ca K5P 9T6.

I will dispose of it in an Environmentally Unfriendly way for you. Hope I saved you from making a terrible mistake.

P.S. Please remove the bark.

Oh well just trying to help out.

Cut it up to chunks. Split the wood with an axe to get decent peices. Still wet? put em in a sunny area and you will have great smoke wood in a few weeks. Guess the thinnest part is already dryed. Smoke on!

Bonus that you have an apple tree to trim up. I'm using up maple trimmings from our yard - cut for a year, then split put in the basement for a bit to finish seasoning.

Derek, hope you're careful you don't bring in any "passengers" with that wood inside your home

Free wood rules! I have a BUNCH of hickory that a coworker gave me last year. Another gave me some pear wood last month AND I have a line on some pecan! Life is good!
