Brad Olson smoked over pistachios with a good resault.

My question is have any one herd/read or think that walnuts can be used for smoking?

If so with or without shells?

The reason that im asking is becouse we got a big walnut tree in the garden that gives me ALOT more nuts then we can handle, ofc we give away to family and friends but i still have more then i can give away.

And if i can use em for smoking and i will try that if none recomend me not to,think they are done in August.

here are some pics of the tree and sum of the fruits/nuts from last year.

Walnuts 1.5-2 month from finished.

Left walnuts rdy to dry....right with the "flesh" still on rdy to be peeled.

to get rid of all nuts we cant use.

I've smoked with many kinds of nut shells, not whole nuts - except for pecans, where I've used whole, crushed. I do the foil pouch thing. Doubt that would be necessary with walnuts as they're larger. Try some on burning coal, get them to smoke, and see if you like the aroma. Might need them drier though.
