Smoke or Rub??

I have heard this debated before so I thought I would ask:

What do you think gives the meat more flavor: the smoke or the rub?
 
I vote for the smoke. Going to this board and some others, I seem to use more wood than the average poster.
 
#1 good meat
#2 good smoke
#3 good rub
#4 good sauce

You can and many do make excellent bbq with just salt and pepper. Some do not even use that. The rest is extra.
 
My vote is definately for the smoke. Too much rub only hides the flavors which took so many hours to develop. With quality meat and good smoke balance the rub is just window dressing.
