Smaller Charcoal Ring

I was wondering if anyone has made a smaller diameter charcoal ring for shorter cooks? I'm trying a 12 in diameter ring I had made for another project tomorrow.

John, you should be able to shut all the vents and choke off the coals to save them for another day. I always fill the chamber, whether for butts and brisket that go for HOURS,or ribs that might go for 5-6 hours.

I don't see the point unless you can get the ring made for free. Like Phil, I pretty much fill the ring and then shut down the vents to save charcoal. I can see, however, that if you do try to use just the right amount of charcoal for the cook, that a smaller ring would be good. The charcoal doesn't burn well if it's too spread out and the layer is too thin.

Let us know how it works and how you like it.

I did a smaller ring myself to get a thicker layer of coals when i use less then a full ring.

And this ring is higher then the standard one.

But check out THIS post for some inspiration.

you technically don't even need a ring. just reduce te amount of charcoal and close your vents a bit as was pointed out above.

Used my 11 1/2 in ring in my WSM loaded with 6 lbs of briquettes & burned 6 hrs @ 240 -270 without a problem. All the fuel burned up well.

I have seen folks just use a couple of fire bricks (the ones with holes in them) to create a smaller square area in the middle of their ring. Also has the benefit of a little extra thermal mass.
